Short Grain Rice

Sello Rojo® Rice (Red Seal) was introduced in Puerto Rico in 1926 as the brand of top quality U.S. grown rice.  Because of its commitment to consistent quality, it soon became Puerto Rico's preferred brand of rice, emerging as the key ingredient for traditional rice dishes such as :   Arroz con dulce, Asopao, and Arroz con gandules.

In the U.S., Sello Rojo rice is available in 5 and 10 lb kraft bags.

Cooking Directions - On the Stove

1.    In a saucepan bring 3 cups of water to a boil.  If desired, add 2 teaspoons of salt and 4 tablespoons of vegetable or olive oil or tub margarine.

2.    Add 2 cups of Sello Rojo® Rice and stir.

3.    Lower the heat to medium, leave uncovered until water is just below the top of the rice.

4.    Stir, cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring again after 10-15 minutes.

Note:  For softer rice use more water.  Or, for firmer rice use less water.

Cooking Directions - In the Microwave

1.    Combine 1 cup of Sello Rojo® Rice, 2 ¾ cups water in a GLASS 3-quart deep microwave-safe dish.  If desired, add salt, butter or tub margarine.

2.    Microwave on high for 25 minutes, or until all water is absorbed.

Makes about 3 cups cooked  rice.

* It is recommended that only 1 cup of rice be prepared in the microwave at a time.  Microwave ovens vary.  Cooking times are approximate.

Cooking Directions and Other Serving Suggestions

To retain vitamins, do not rinse before or drain after cooking.

Besides being used as a 'salt substitute', adding about 1 teaspoon of white vinegar while cooking white rice makes it fluffy and extra white.
